More Post Work

Today I set about getting the posts ready for receiving the headboard and relieving the sides for decoration. I plunged a slot for the headboard. Then I used a template to route out the sides of my posts using a 1/4 inch round over bit (no bearing).

Headboard post end turning

The ends of the headboard posts are turned on my foot board. To match, I attempted to use my lathe tools to turn the end. I am still fresh at this and there was a lot of air turning that resulted chipping and tear out. I needed to get the job done, so I got out that multi-tool that does nothing well, the Roto-Zip. With the sander attachment and a 36 grit disk I was able to round off the ends to match my foot board and not chip out my posts. I then stepped up (down?) the grit to 50 and then to the scotchbrite disk (I have no idea what that grit is equivalent to). Mission accomplished. The next step is to relieve the sides of the post, beading the edges. Stay Tuned!
